Einstein

Located at the hillside sloping up to the Getty Museum, the Einstein house was originally designed in 1973 and was expanded in 1990 from 3,500 sq. ft. to 7,000 sq. ft. in order to accommodate the owner's growing art collection. The remodel and expanded site design focused on an outdoor sculpture garden, including free-standing Turrell light cube. Organized around a central spine, the minimalist design steps up the sloping site, connecting the lower children's yard with the upper-level. The circulation system ends in an indoor/outdoor sitting pavilion, bracketed on one side by a sculpture garden and natural outdoor amphitheater, with a new gallery space.

To continue the geometry of the original house and continue the uphill progression of objects along an existing walkway, a 3,500 sq. ft. gallery space was added at the tennis court level. The new gallery minimizes direct south and west facing Sun, while giving maximum wall space and creating a residential quality, different from that of the living and family room spaces of the existing residence. As a foil to the right angle geometry of the existing house, new faceted glass walls were added to allow soft, northern light into the home's interior.
